Michigan State University (Msu) is an urban research university in East Lansing, Michigan, reviving the spirit of “the American campus community.” Established in 1970, Msu was designed to help mold our new and emerging metropolis; a melting pot of culture and ideas with a desire to learn, grow, and teach. Now, in east Lansing, the University offers more than just academic excellence. It has become a venue for many community events and attractions.
One of the most impressive elements of the building is the theater department. MSU’s theater department features renowned performances by Broadway actors and actresses, such as Jon Bon Jovi, who recently returned to perform at the John Hancock Plaza in downtown East Lansing. Other notable performances by MSU’s theater group have included The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera, and Chicago, with Don Marquis. In addition to its world-class theater productions, the university offers other types of entertainment options. Many of these center on the broadway shows in east Lansing.
In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of visitors and participants at the state university’s historic Broad Street Theatre. During the summer months, the theatre presents popular musicals and other performances. These popular events include the “Broadway musical,” “The First Night Backstage,” and “A Day in the Life of George.” The Lion King and The Phantom of the Opera have also had popular TV appearances. Visitors can visit the theatre during these performances and enjoy a wonderful night out at the comedy club.
East Lansing is home to another great comedy festival. The annual Great Lakes Renaissance Fiesta happens every May and is attended by thousands of visitors. This three-day event includes concerts, theatrical presentations, lectures, and family events. In addition to the comedy and music performances, visitors will be able to see demonstrations of pottery, leather work, jewelery, glass blowing, and many other types of artistic talent.
Throughout May, MSU students can participate in the annual Great Lakes Renaissance Festival. This family-friendly event features medieval jousting, lectures, theatrical presentations, and delicious food. During the event, students will have the chance to meet with professionals who will talk about their careers and provide information about the artistic careers of those from all over the world. The Renaissance Festival is held annually in mid-May. During this event, students will have the opportunity to participate in lectures, workshops, play tours, wine tasting, and costume parades.
Students attending MSU’s S.U. Davis campus can take part in the annual Jazz Fest event. This annual event features local and national jazz artists performing throughout the campus on Labor Day weekend. This great event will also include a parade that travels through campus to the Labor Day Parade on the morning of the day of the festival. Students may attend this great program if they so desire.
If you would like to host an event on campus that you think would be fun for your students, consider having a Brannaman concert. Brannaman is an all-grass band that takes requests and performs to a disc jockey and then follows up with an open mic event on the first weekend of each semester. Each month, a different band will perform. This is a great opportunity for students to get to know the band members as well as making music with the same music. Brannaman is regularly one of the most requested CDs by students in the MSU performing arts department.
East Lansing Michigan also has a plethora of events and festivals that students can participate in. With the large number of sports teams within the university, there are many different sporting events that students can choose to be involved in. Athletic events include soccer, lacrosse, golf, baseball, basketball, and much more. Student athletes have a lot of opportunities available to them in this town, making it an ideal place for students who are interested in participating in sporting events or performing arts.
