The Band’s Visit – 11/1 Update
Well the spectacular new musical The Band’s Visit has only been in “previews” on Broadway and for just a couple of weeks. However, the buzz is really picking up and many seem to feel that this is the next huge hit on Broadway. Sales results are indeed showing that already in the previews every performance has been sold out. Ticket sales for the remainder of 2017 and well into 2018 are starting to gain a lot of momentum.
We have not yet seen any “official” reviews of the Broadway performances thus far, but the reviews were glowingly favorable for the run up to Broadway. The musical also took down a whole host of awards. One interesting note is that the lead actor, Tony Shalhoub, prior to The Band’s Visit had never sung on stage before! This is the type of risk taking that patrons will find in The Band’s Visit. Some say that the musical is as much about what is NOT stated or sung as it is about what you do see and hear literally. A challenging musical that makes people think critically. This upcoming Tony Awards seasons promises to be as exciting as ever.
2/1 - Update
As we start getting closer to the official Tony Awards season The Band's Visit continues to pick up momentum in the categories related to musicals. The musical continues to play in front of sold out audiences every performance of every week. Recently, there has been a lot of noise (no pun intended) over social media and otherwise about the songs and soundtrack for The Band's Visit. Take a listen when you get the opportunity as it is easy enough to find online.
The Band’s Visit
Composed by the renowned David Yazbek, The Band’s Visit is an original musical that is based on the 2007 Israeli film of the same name by Eran Kolirin, writer and director. The musical made its premiere Off – Broadway in December of 2016 and has since won the approval of quite a number of audiences and critics alike. The work on the musical is done according to the book by Itamar Moses and borrows a lot from the screenplay of the film. The musical revolves around Egyptian Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra members who unexpectedly wind up stranded on a little Israeli desert town. The band members were scheduled to perform in a city of a similar name the following day which they were headed for before winding up in the desert town.
The original production of The Band’s Visit Off – Broadway made its premiere at the Linda Gross Theater. The previews opened on the 11th of November, 2016 while the official opening was on the 8th of December, 2016 and closure on the 8th of January the following year. Development and production of the musical was supported by a number of organizations that include The National Endowments for the Arts, The National Alliance for Musical Theatre’s National Fund for New musicals as well as The Laurents/Hatcher Foundation.
The Band’s Visit is a musical that is based on events that follow a mix-up at the border which leads to an Egyptian Police Band being sent to a remote village located in the heart on the Israeli desert. They realize that this is not the right destination but with no viable transportation and no hotel in sight, the unlikely travelers have to figure out a way to survive the night.
Upon arrival at the desert town, the band has an encounter with Dina who owns a local café. Politely, Tewfiq asks for directions to the Arab Cultural Center. She however informs Tewfiq that there is no cultural center in the region, Arab or Israeli. Dina realizing that they are probably lost graciously offers to take them up for the night. She offers to personally host Haled and Tewfiq. The other members of the band will spend the night either at the café or at the home of Itzik. While Itzik is pleased to host some members of the band, his wife, Iris resents the intrusion.
What follows is an eventful night in which Dina and Tewfiq head out for dinner but chance on Dina’s hostile married ex-boyfriend. The two open to each other about their disturbed pasts. While Dina confesses how she regrets waiting too long to have a child, Tewfiq reveals how his marriage disintegrated following the death of his son. Haled on the other end accompanies Papi, an Israeli to a roller disco and helps him connect with a girl he admires.
The beauty of the musical is in how people from two different cultures which are often opposing come together to appreciate common humanity and spend time together in unity. The two cultures influence each other and bring happiness and appreciation to the surface.
Following the production of The Band’s Visit musical, it has been nominated for and bagged quite a number of awards. The musical won top honors at the 2017 Obie Awards in the category of Outstanding Musical, Outer Critics Circle Awards category of outstanding new Off – Broadway musical, Lucille Lortel Awards, Outstanding Musical and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards category of Best Musical. The musical was nominated in the category of Outstanding Musical at the Drama Desk Awards. For the Off – Broadway Alliance Awards, the musical was nominated for Outstanding Musical.
