History and Location
Named after Homer Curran, the first owner, the Curran Theatre San Francisco is a famous theatre located in the San Francisco Theatre District. Before embarking on the construction of the Curran Theatre, Homer operated another theatre that had his name as well. The name of the very first Curran Theatre has however been changed a couple of times while the Curran Theatre in San Francisco has maintained its original name. The theatre was officially opened in February of 1992 and was originally a Shubert house. It was later turned into a showcase for presentation of Theatre Guilds. Operating in Los Angeles, the CLO-Civic Light Opera later became closely associated with the venue. CLO had considerable success at the theatre in terms of bookings. They also produced a number of their own shows with stars being featured in lead roles. The Curran hosted the magical Dear Evan Hansen to sold out crowds for a couple of months, and it now hosts Harry Potter.
Following CLO’s shift to Orpheum Theatre San Francisco in 1977, Curran Theatre’s operations were assumed by Carole Shorenstein Hays and James M. Nederlander. They then proceeded to launch their season of Best of Broadway in which they started John Raitt. Shorenstein changed her organization’s name to SHN which she later departed from in 2015. She did this in order to exclusively focus her attention on the venue.
There are other wonderful venues for performing arts in San Francisco, as well as an abundance of art museums and boutiques. The Orpheum of course has a long history of hosting huge Broadway Shows like Hamilton, but there is also the Golden Gate Theatre which is part of the Broadway in SF and plays host to incredible shows like The Book of Mormon and Come From Away. Shows like Hadestown SF and Jagged Little Pill are on their way into San Francisco as well.
The War Memorial Opera House hosts ballet and opera among other performances, and Davies Symphony Hall is home to the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.
Curran Theatre’s exact location is at 445 Geary between San Francisco’s Taylor and Mason Streets.

The Reopening of the Theatre
As it stands, THE Curran Theatre is no longer operated by SNH. In September of 2015, the venue was shut down to give way for renovations. Various renovations and upgrades were made on the theatre during the renovation. A major upholstery that targeted the seats and carpeting of the facility was done during the time. The mechanical and electrical systems were renovated and upgraded as well. There was upgrade and expansion of lobbies as well.
The renovation of the Curran Theatre was pretty interesting as it was marked with a number of unique events. For instance, during the renovations, non-traditional works were presented by the theatre in a series dubbed Under Construction. The audience was allowed in and they took their sitting on the stage. The Curran Theatre was later reopened on the 25th of January, 2017. The opening act was Fun Home, the musical.
