Ben Berger and Morris Chalfen of Minnesota paid $15,000 for the newly dissolved National Basketball League (NBL) Detroit Gems club to create the Lakers team in 1947. One of the most successful and loved professional sports franchises in all of America, the LA Lakers were successful right from the time of its formation.

In league history, the Lakers and their adversary, the Boston Celtics, are tied with 17 combined Basketball Association of America (BAA) and National Basketball Association (NBA) titles won.

The Lakers won the final BAA championship after joining the BAA (the league that served as the official forerunner of the NBA) in 1948–1949. The Lakers won four of the first five league championships when the NBA was founded in 1949.

The Lakers' winning streak finally came to an end in 1951, when they lost to the then Rochester Royals. Nonetheless, the team bounced back quickly and went on to win the title for the next three years.

Introduction of the shot clock

The LA Lakers are directly responsible for the introduction of the shot clock. Before 1950, there were no shot clocks in basketball. The match between Fort Wayne Pistons (Detroit Pistons) and LA Lakers turned out to be the lowest scoring game with a score of 19-18. This prompted the league to introduce the shot clock.

Over the years, several legendary players have played for LA Lakers. Let's go through some of the most significant names to ever play for Los Angeles Lakers.

George Mikan

Mikan is hailed as the architect of basketball's contemporary era. He was the premier center, retiring as the all-time greatest scorer with 11,764 points. He averaged 22.6 points per game, with 13.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 520 NBL, BAA, and NBA matches. Mikan enjoyed a very successful professional career, winning seven titles in the NBL, BAA, and NBA in just nine seasons.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar spent 20 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association. No other NBA athlete had scored/blocked more points, won more Most Valuable Player Awards, participated in more All-Star Games or completed more seasons than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar when he retired from the sport. He was 42 at the time of retirement. As a player, he was a part of six NBA championship teams, and as an assistant coach, he was a part of two more. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

Magic Johnson

Magic Johnson, who played 13 seasons in the National Basketball Association, is largely recognized as the best point guard of all time. Johnson's professional accomplishments include:

  • three MVPs in the NBA
  • three Most Valuable Player Awards from the NBA Finals
  • nine appearances in NBA Finals
  • twelve All-Star events
  • nine First Team All-NBA honors

Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant played for the Los Angeles Lakers for the entire duration of his 20-year career. Bryant, who is regarded as one of the GOATs, won five NBA titles, was an 18-time All-Star, was selected to the All-NBA Team 15 times, and was named to the All-Defensive Team 12 times. On January 26, 2020, a helicopter accident tragically claimed his life.

LeBron James

In discussions about the best basketball player of all time, LeBron James, sometimes known by the nickname "King James," is frequently compared to Michael Jordan.

James has won two Olympic gold medals, three All-Star MVP awards, four NBA MVP awards, four NBA Finals MVP awards, and four NBA MVP honors. James is second in lifetime points scored, has the second-most playoff points scored, along with the seventh-most assists in his career.
