Broadway Musical Tickets

Revivals appear fairly frequently on Broadway. A recent example of a sensational revival and immensely successful run is Hello, Dolly! which starred Bette Midler. Once On This Island is a revival of a musical that previously appeared on Broadway and it appears as though it might be ready to take Broadway by storm.

The reviews for Once On This Island thus far have been gloriously supportive and positive. Many analysts are raving about the cast and wonderfully constructed musical and music. The musical is playing at the smallish Circle On The Square Theatre which is quite unique. Once On This Island

Once On This Island is an exciting new musical on Broadway that has received critical acclaim from both critics and musical lovers. The musical is based on My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl, a 1985 novel by Rosa Guy. The musical’s setting is Caribbean Sea’s French Antilles archipelago. The musical revolves around a peasant girl who resides on a tropical island. The girl defies her status and unites people from different social classes through the power of love.

History and Background

Once On This Island’s original Broadway production had its run between the years 1990 and 1991. The lyrics were done by Lynn Ahrens while the music was done by Stephen Flaherty. Elements of The Little Mermaid and the story of Romeo and Juliet were incorporated into the show for diversity and flavor. Currently, the musical is being revived on Broadway, with a production that was opened on the 3^rd of December, 2017. Its previews however commenced on the 9^th of November, 2017 at Circle in the Square Theatre.

Producer Ken Davenport headed the planning for the Broadway revival of Once On This Island. The direction role was taken by Michael Arden and as stated earlier, previews began on November 9^th while the official opening was on December 3^rd. Choreography for the musical was handled by Camille A. Brown.

Previous Broadway Run

Once On This Island has previously had its run on Broadway. The official opening of the Broadway production for the show was held at the Booth Theatre on the 18^th of October, 1990 and was later closed on the 1^st of December, 1991. During this time, the show had 19 previews and 469 performances. Choreography and direction was done by Graciela Daniele. Some of the members of the cast of the initial show were LaChanze in the role of TiMoune, Jerry Dixon depicting Daniel, Andrea Frierson playing Erzulie, Sheila Gibbs in the role of Mama Euralie and Kecia Lewis depicting Asaka among others.

Besides the Broadway production of Once On This Island, the musical has also been staged in a number of Off-Broadway platforms including Playwrights Horizon in which it run between 6^th of May and 27^th of May, 1990. The musical has also been staged at the Birmingham Rep and the West End Royalty Theatre that has since been renamed to Peacock Theatre, in 2009, it was revived in the United Kingdom and was staged at the Nottingham Playhouse, Birmingham Rep as well as in the Hackney Empire Theatre in London.

The 2017 Broadway production of Once On This Island has received largely positive reviews. Some viewers have described the musical as a show that has an exquisite way of arousing nostalgia. Other viewers have also referred to the musical as “a show that springs the awakening for a journey to the past”. The electric choreography for the show has also received praise from critics and viewers alike.

Story

Once On This Island follows the story of a peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy boy, as told by the village story tellers to comfort a little girl who was crying from fear of thunder. Their different cultures and distinct social classes create a rift between the two. In order to be together, Ti Moune and Daniel have to overcome various challenges caused by their different cultures and social classes. Daniel stays committed to his responsibility, his engagement to Andrea but also insists on keeping their love alive. What follows is a series of emotional turmoil that involves the gods who are keen on proving which is stronger between love and death. Ti Moune Proves that love triumphs over death and trades her life for that of Daniel and is brought back as tree on the shore.
