Citi Emerson Colonial Theatre
The Citi Emerson Colonial Theatre, or simply, the Colonial Theatre is quite the venue these days. The place has seen so many changes since its grand opening, and grand reopening and then grand re-re-opening that it has turned to quite a spectacle. The theatre is infamous for debuting some of the greatest Broadway shows ever created by mankind. But, there's more to this theatre than the golden sheets that meet the eye. Boston is exploding with arts and culture. SeatsForEveryone.com can always help you find seats for Hamilton Boston or Dear Evan Hansen Boston or Hadestown Boston or Come From Away Boston. Don't miss out when Hadestown comes to Boston along with Jagged Little Pill.
The Citi Emerson Colonial Theatre is also playing a big part on the ongoing renaissance of the downtown Boston core and historic Boston Theatre District. Long neglected the recent renovation is bringing back the joy of the Golden Eras in performing arts in Boston. It’s location is such that it connects the Theatre District, the Boston Common, the Park Plaza area, tiny Bay Village, and Downtown Crossing. Visitors can easily walk past the venue either via casual walking or from several nearby T stations. Citi Emerson also has concerts and brings in big acts like Lizzo and Post Malone.
There are other incredible venues for performing arts very close to the Citi Emerson Colonial Theatre as well. Boston has a rich cultural tradition and patrons can also enjoy the Boston Opera House Seating Chart along with the Wang Theatre and Shubert Theatre. Exciting nightlife in Boston is right nearby as well at the Royale Boston.
There also appears to be a residential component of the construction taking place surrounding the theatre itself. The structure on the corner of the two main roads is undergoing a vast renovation and bringing in luxury residential living space.
Location
The theatre is located in the heart of Boston. The exact address would be 106 Boylston Street, Boston, Massachusetts. The location had the Boston Public Library prior to the construction of the Colonial Theatre. It is currently being petitioned to make the venue a Boston Landmark since it is the oldest theatrical venue in Boston.
History
The Colonial Theatre opened in 1900 but it has been closed and reopened several times. It was designed by the architectural firm of Clarence Blackall and the construction was paid for by Frederick Lothrop Ames Jr. The first play to even make its way to these old curtain was Ben-Hur which was performed on December 20, 1900. And, right then and there, the theatre became a legend. Ben-Hur wasn't your average play too. The whole performance featured a cast of 350 people and eight live horses parading around the stage. This settled a long time tradition of huge Broadway shows previewing and debuting at the Colonial Theatre.
Renovations
There haven't been too many changes made to the theatre. The Colonial Theatre hasn't belong to one entity in quite a long time. It has changed hands so many times over the course of its 118 year establishment and almost each new owner brought on his own changes. Emerson College made quite a lot of changes to the theatre, but most of them weren't in the favor of the theatre, more as to their own agenda. In 2006, they made college dorms above the theatre, and in 2015, Emerson literally wanted to wipe the theatre from existence and create a mere dining hall in its place. However, this plan was quickly cancelled because of the petitioning from the citizens and a Change.org petition that managed to garner 7,000 signatures. Finally, Emerson had a change of heart and decided to reopen the theatre to Broadway. In January 2017, the dealings were finalized and the theatre finally got some action in June 2018 with Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
