Boston Opera House – 2017/2018 Season and Updates

The Boston Opera House continues to experience outstanding success serving thousands of happy fans and patrons on a weekly basis. The 2017/2018 lineup is extremely exciting as Boston Opera House will host Phantom Of The Opera, Fun Home, Waitress, Love Never Dies, Aladdin, The Book Of Mormon, and Hamilton.

The entire community around the Boston Opera House is experiencing an exceptional rival. Boston’s Downtown Crossing neighborhood is booming with new and exciting retail and restaurant options. It is very easy to access this neighborhood via the T on the Green Line or Orange Line. There is not much better than spending an afternoon walking around Downtown Crossing and Boston in general. The Boston Opera House blends into the fabric of the community and serves as a centerpiece of cultural enrichment and life.

Boston Opera House – Center Of Activity For Boston

So, what else is around the Boston Opera House. Interestingly enough the Boston Opera House is not per se located directly within the “Theatre District” as depicted on many Boston maps and tourist guides. It certainly isn’t far away from other venues such as the Charles Playhouse, Wilbur Theatre, Wang Theatre, or Majestic Theatre. They are all quite close to each other, however one can’t literally see them all lined up next to each other on the street or when walking around.

Boston Opera House is located essentially right smack in the middle of an energetic core of Boston that is becoming livelier by the week and month. Boston Opera House is within a hundred meters or so of the Downtown Crossing T station and just yards from the new Millenium Tower located at Downtown Crossing. This Washington Street corridor is really starting to boom. It is very enjoyable to walk along this corridor and find all sorts of new and interesting restaurants, coffee shoppes, retail outlets, and many other things. This same corridor also includes the T stops along the Orange Line for Chinatown and State.

If a visitor were to walk north on Washington Street from the Boston Opera House they would bump into the State stop on the Orange Line and eventually make their way to historic Faneuil hall and Quincy Market. The map may make it appear as though one needs to drive or take the train from Boston Opera House to Faneuil Hall but that is not the case of one enjoys a nice 5-10 minute walk through rich culture and history.

Moving South from the Boston Opera House a visitor or patron will eventually run into both Chinatown and the Theatre District. The two neighborhoods adjoin each other and are so tightly intertwined walking back and forth between the two is inconsequential. As Boston continues to grow and evolve the Boston Opera House is indeed literally right in the center of it all.

The Downtown Crossing T stop is also a hub for the Red Line, Orange Line, and Green Line making it highly accessible via mass transportation.

The specialty of Back Deck is that they use Hardwood Charcoal to grill all of their meat. Well, we certainly believe them because a steak here is much better than anything you can find anywhere else. It's the perfect place if you want a family BBQ without having to do the barbeque. Impeccable grilling with great cocktails, beer and exquisite wine is a combo that you can't say no to.

Ziggy’s

Ziggy’s is an incredible breakfast and lunch spot that is actually part of the Beantown Pub. Ziggy’s is located perfectly on the corner adjacent to Beantown Pub and opening up towards the church and the Boston Common. At Ziggy’s you will find robust and hearty breakfast options in terms of typical morning meals and breakfast sandwiches. This is the place to be after a night at the Boston Opera House when you are looking for a great breakfast.

The Ziggy's staff is very friendly and the establishment is literally connected right into the Beantown Pub. The meals at Ziggy's are cooked in the Beantown Pub kitchen. The egg, cheese, and sausage sandwich on wheat is an excellent choice for breakfast to which we can firmly attest.

Beantown Pub

The Beantown Pub is a very cozy and friendly establishment that embodies the charm and interpersonal contact seen throughout Boston. This is your quintessential place to “hang out and grab a drink” and enjoy reasonably priced and well prepared food. Make sure to check out the cheeseburger with rice and brown beans and the reuben. The Beantown Pub also has a few pool tables and the electronic jukebox. In the afternoons you might find folks just hanging out and watching some sports and playing a little pool. In the mid-evening timeframe the pool tables are completely booked up and music is cranking in the background.

If you are in the mood for some local flavor and style before or after your trip to the Boston Opera House, you can’t go wrong with the Beantown Pub. The menu is open late as well. We just recently ate their around midnight after enjoying an incredible show at the Boston Opera House. Enjoy!

Sweet Green

Sweet Green is part of a local chain taking over Boston. There is a restaurant location right in Downtown Crossing within short walking distance of the Boston Opera House. Sweet green uses fresh, organic, and local foods to make extremely healthy and very delicious bowls. Your typical bowl includes items such as wild rice, sweet potatoes, lean meat or fish such as salmon, goat cheese, and kale.

There are several options and you can build your own as well. The main point here is that this is real food that is very healthy. When you are done at Sweet Green you feel full and satisfied and clean. The food is prepared quickly but this is not fast food junk that makes your stomach turn. This is real food with real ingredients. If you are looking for something healthy and quick before the show at the Boston Opera House, you can’t beat Sweet Green.

Okay, before we even say anything, as soon as you walk through the doors, you're just going to say "wow". The décor is just mind-bending. The dining experience is meant to replicate the nostalgia of the '40s. The restaurant is quite roomy with crystal chandeliers with raw brick walls and gray tufted sofas, hand-clipped Calacatta marble floors along with a hand-carved Santo Domingo mahogany bar. It would be a huge understatement to say that Yvonne's is the bar when it comes to the furnishing of a modern day restaurant.

The Chicken & Rice Guys

The saying Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication couldn't be truer when it comes to the CnR Guys. Their menu isn't anything exotic, it's just basic stuff. But, the best part is their Middle Eastern spin on each of their dishes. Their dishes really give you a taste of how things are done in the other corner of the globe.

Legal Crossing

Locals are familiar with the Legal Seafodds brand, and Legal Crossing is an extension of that. The location is literally right across the street from the Boston Opera House. The restaurant itself is a slight variation of what you find at the Legal Seafoods in Braintree. It is high end seafood and an upscale dining environment. There is ample outdoor seating as well for those that choose to sit outside during pleasant weather.

Q Restaurant

Q Restaurant brings the entire taste of Asia right to your doorstep. These folks don't restrict themselves with just one country, you can a unique combination of Chinese, Japanese and Thai cuisine here. They are notorious for their Mongolian Hot Pot which doesn’t just earn them a good name in Atlanta. They are famous all over the world for this one dish. As soon as you step inside this place, you're overwhelmed by the aroma of the food. The service is absolutely amazing. The seating arrangements could have been better, but the exceptional food more than makes up for it.

Boston Opera House History and Interesting Facts

The Boston Opera House was originally known as the B.F. Keith Memorial Theatre. Thomas White Lamb designed the original Boston Opera House using a combination of French and Italian styles. Edward Franklin Albee supervised the construction and erection of the theatre and did so in honor of his late partner, Benjamin Franklin Keith.

The first theatre program took place on October 29, 1928. Many local luminaries in and around Boston attended along with the Governor of the Commonwealth and Mayor of The City of Boston. Patrons saw a screening of the feature film “Oh Kay”.

In 1965 Sack Theatres purchased the theatre and they eventually installed another auditorium. Sack Theatres put great effort and investment into restoring the property and renamed it the Savoy Theatre and eventually the Savoy 1&2. This operation continued until 1978 when the theatre was purchased by the Opera Company of Boston.

On August 15, 1979 the Opera Company of Boston acquired full ownership of the theatre and named it the Boston Opera House which is the current name. The Boston Opera House embarked on an epic run hosting the nation’s finest performances. Unfortunately, the theatre began to deteriorate substantially as the costs of running it escalated and utility bills and taxes went unpaid. The company closed the theatre in 1991.

In 1995 the National Trust For Historic Preservation placed the Boston Opera House on its list of the 11 Most Endangered Buildings.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino helped initiate a process in 2002 that ultimately led to the theatre reopening on June 28, 2004 with The Hard Hat Concert. The restoration reduced the original capacity of 2,900 to 2,677 to increase comfortable seating and restore wonderful sight lines. Many other wonderful upgrades took place as well.

Currently the theatre is thriving under the ownership of Boston Opera House Ventures, LLC. Broadway Across America and the Boston Ballet provide the majority of the performances and the theatre is booked solid for a very long time into the future. A new era of wonderful success and popularity is well underway for a national historic treasure.

Architecture

Thomas White Lamb was the architect that designed the Boston Opera House. A look back on the history of theatre in America reveals that Thomas White Lamb was likely the most prolific theatre architect of the twentieth century.

Lamb was born in Dundee, Scotland and moved to New York City. In New York City Lamb studied architecture and worked as a building inspector among other places. He is credited with putting his touch on more than 300 theatres worldwide. Given the logistics involved with getting to these locations and the time spent working on them – it is safe to say Lamb spent a very big chunk of his adult life making theatre’s look gorgeous.

Thomas White Lamb tweaked and evolved his style through the 1920’s and even drew inspiration from his brother. The rise of moving pictures and impact from Hindu and Chinese culture also instilled in Lamb the spirit and drive to consistently inject a new angle or modification into his style. One of his largest creations in the second half of the 20’s was the Fox Theatre in San Francisco. During this time Lamb also created the B.F. Keith Memorial Theatre (now known as the Boston Opera House).
